The 5 Money Personalities: A Book For Every Couple – Review

imageThe 5 Money Personalities is by Scott & Bethany Palmer, a married couple of financial advisors. They have found over the years that everyone has a primary and secondary money personality.  The 5 Money Personalities are:

  • Saver
  • Spender
  • Security Seeker
  • Risk Taker
  • Flyer

By reading the book, and taking the Money Personality Test together, I learned that my husband is a Saver-Security Seeker. And I am a Saver-Spender! That sure sounds like any oxymoron doesn’t it, but I think those two sides of me tend to balance each other 🙂 I even learned more about the dynamics of that in the book. We found out a bit of they “why” the two of us get along so well when it comes down to money – in large part because we discuss it openly, and we don’t hide money matters (which the Palmers call “financial infidelity”).

Inside The 5 Money Personalities’ pages, in addition to learning yours and your spouse’s Money Personalities, you will:

  • Relate to money squabble stories from other couples
  • Learn about Opposite Dynamics
  • Tackle financial infidelity
  • Practice The Money Dump™ and The Money Huddle™
  • Handle challenges like gift-giving and holidays with The 5 Money Personalities™ Survival Guide

This is a great video overview of what The 5 Money Personalities is all about:

Did you know that 70% of divorced couples divorce at least in part due to money problems in their relationship? A sobering statistic! The 5 Money Personalities is something every married couple should read, whether you’re newly married or have been married for twenty years. The Palmers believe that it takes 90 days to institute a new habit in your marriage. So take the Money Personality Test here with your spouse right now, read the book together, and form some new habits.

The 5 Money Personalities is just $15.99. I’m looking forward to handing my children each a copy when they get married someday!

Godly Womanhood: The 5 R’s for Homeschool Moms Bundle – Review

During the summer we always take some time off from homeschooling.  The summers are so short here in Nova Scotia, and the children need time to bask in the sun, not to mention take advantage of all the fantastic summer programs they love engaging in.  Not only that, but I find I really need some time, not only to plan for the coming homeschool year, but also to rest, refresh, and rejuvenate 🙂

Eternal Encouragement’s Godly Womanhood: The 5 R’s for Homeschool Moms Bundle is just the thing to absorb over the summer.  It’s fun listening to Lorrie Flem, she’s so down to earth and has a great sense of humour.  As someone who is very visual, it’s great to also be able to follow along with the e-books while I’m listening.  I can even download the pdf’s onto my iPod touch along with the audio files, and can listen and read on the go, for instance while waiting for one of my children’s activities to finish up 🙂

This bundle consists of five parts, the five “R’s”:

Refresh: A Woman Who Kneels Before God Can Stand Before Anyone -is all about getting closer to and maintaining our relationship with God.  We need to make the time to spend with Him and to read the Bible daily, and to pray.

Rekindle: Red Hot is So Cool – Marriage.  Lorrie makes a really good point about our perception of “romance” and how the concept of love is in the Bible, but not this current concept of “romance” that we have.  This vision of romance can often lead to discontent in a marriage, if your “knight” isn’t living up to it.  Lorrie has some great advice on intimacy and on reconnecting with your husband.

I REALLY enjoyed and got a LOT out of Session 3: Refine: From Homekeeping 101 to Graduating With Honours!  Lorrie covers her tips for organization and conquering clutter – this is something I’m working on!  I have so many paper piles especially, from homeschool papers to business papers, to general running a house papers.  At present I have been working on purging all the useless clutter, and this session really renewed my resolve – just what I needed!  When I find my resolve flagging, I’m going to pull this out and listen and read again.

Rejuvenate: What to Do When Abel is Raising Cain – on parenting.  Lorrie shares some great ideas and coping strategies.  I’m a big fan of teaching children to “do everything as unto the Lord”.  And keeping in perspective that parenting is a full-time job is important too.  There are some areas in which we don’t see eye to eye here though – for instance, I don’t spank my children.  I don’t personally think that a lack of spanking is the reason for young people’s violent crime – I think we can easily find other factors that contribute to this problem.

Rest: Give it Up and Get it All – This is all about sorting out your priorities, finding joy in serving others, and counting your blessings.  And something very important – learning to say no and not stretching ourselves too thin!

The 5 R’s Bundle is available at The Eternal Encouragement store for just $24.97 US (an over $100 value).  You get 5 e-books (approximately 30 pages each) and 5 audio files (approximately 1 1/2 hrs each)!

Lorrie’s Audio Collection – Review and Giveaway!

Sometimes as a busy mom it’s hard to get a chance to really sit down, curl up, and absorb a book.Photobucket We’re pulled in so many different directions, and we have so much to do to keep the homeschooling and the household running smoothly.

I often find it’s easier to listen to something than to sit down and read.  Whether I listen on the laptop in whatever room I’m working in, or I transfer audio files to my iPod touch and do dishes or hang laundry while listening, I find I can get things done while I listen to something good – something uplifting, encouraging, or inspirational.

Eternal Encouragement Magazine (formerly Teach Magazine) offers a variety of wonderful audio files for women, whether you’re a mother, a homeschooler, a wife, or all of the above.

I received two MP3 files from Lorrie’s audio collection:  Keys to a Queenly Castle and Attitude Adjustments.  These two audios were recorded by Lorrie at a homeschooling conference.  Each is one hour in length.

PhotobucketIn Keys to a Queenly Castle, Lorrie covers the 12 Habits of a Queen in Her Castle.  She stresses that heart and attitude are important, and that we are special, the “co-heirs of grace” and NOT a doormat, but half of the marriage.   I love thinking of myself as a queen in my castle, it really makes me think about myself and my home in a different light.

PhotobucketWe all need an attitude adjustment from time to time, and Attitude Adjustments is definitely my favourite of these two audios!  It put a smile on my face and I’ll definitely be listening to it again and again.  Lorrie says our attitude is something we put on every day.  It’s our decision whether we are going to be happy or not!

It’s fun listening to Lorrie, she’s so down to earth and has a great sense of humour.  And I just HAVE to mention that the introduction and goodbye to each audio by Lorrie’s little boy Luke is sure to make you smile – he is so cute!

And…Lorrie is offering a giveaway for our readers! The giveaway prize will be one MP3 file of your choice.

To enter:
1. Go to Eternal Encouragement to choose the MP3 file that YOU want to win
2. Go to The Gabby Moms blog where June’s review links are posted and leave a comment stating:
a. that you read about the giveaway on the Homeschooling in Nova Scotia blog
b. the name of MP3 file YOU want if you are chosen as winner
c. your email contact info
The winner will be chosen on Saturday, June 18th via and will be notified by an email to the contact info left in comments.  The winner will have 48 hours to respond to claim the prize or an alternate winner will be chosen.

Each one of Lorrie’s audios is available for immediate download in MP3 file format for just $6.97 US OR as an audio CD for $9.97 US plus shipping.

The Marriage Bundle – Review

It’s spring and love is in the air!  Perhaps you’re fortunate enough to be attending a wedding in the coming months to witness the exciting beginning of a marriage.  I love weddings – I always hold my hubby’s hand throughout wedding ceremonies, and renew my vows silently while the new couple is saying theirs.

Whether you have been married a long while or just a few days, has something for you – MarPhotobucketriage: The Have and To Hold Bundle!

This bundle includes:

  • Audio files
    5 R’s Session 2: Rekindle
One Life to Live, One Man
  • E-books
Loving Your Knight in Shining Armour, Even When He Doesn’t Shine
Road map to a Marvelous Marriage
    Marriage Tidbits to Treasure
    Quotes, Not Quibbles
    Marriage Report
  • E-booklets
31 Daily Biblical Prayers for Wives to Pray for their Husbands
    Encouragement Report
    Don’t Settle
    What God Says About Marriage
    75 Inexpensive Romantic Rut Cures
    It Happened One Afternoon
  • Eternal Encouragement Magazine (formerly TEACH) Issues:
2001 Summer Issue “Loving Your Husband”
2009 Spring Issue “Marriages Made Marvelous”

WOW, that is a LOT packed into one bundle!  I downloaded everything to my iPod Touch and dove right in.  I laughed, I cried, I got goosebumps, and I made notes. Photobucket75 Inexpensive Romantic Rut Cures has to be my favourite part of this package!  Its 14 pages are chock full of terrific ideas to spice up your marriage, and many of them don’t cost a thing 🙂  I’m already starting to use some of these in my daily life 😉  I am also interested in research and enjoyed reading the Marriage Report, all about studies on divorce rates and the breakdown by age, religion etc, along with the very sobering statistics on children of divorced families.

Being able to review all these wonderful resources has been such a blessing.  It’s made me realize that I make time to read at least one book on homeschooling and one book on parenting per year, but I don’t always include anything on marriage.  Just like I need some perspective on homeschooling and parenting, I need to keep perspective within my marriage as well.  I will keep coming back to these fantastic resources in the years to come 🙂

Marriage: To Have and To Hold Bundle is $39.97 US for the instantly downloadable version, and $49.97 US for the physical products, plus shipping.  This is a great deal, especially considering that one e-book included, Loving Your Knight in Shining Armour, if bought separately is $18.97 US.

Eternal Encouragement Magazine: Review

PhotobucketFormerly named TEACH Magazine, Eternal Encouragement is a magazine for all Christian women.  I received this magazine for honest review from Eternal Encouragement Magazine as a part of The Gabby Moms blogging program.  All opinions expressed are my own 🙂

I love books, I love magazines, I guess you could say I’m a bookworm.  This magazine doesn’t disappoint, it’s a beautiful full-colour, well-constructed magazine.  However, I was surprised when I first received my copy of the Eternal Encouragement Spring, 2011 edition…

See how small it is?

It fits in the front pocket of my purse:

It’s easy to curl up with a cup of tea and read it…hmmm…I like this “take along” size 🙂  It’s easy to keep handy for when I’m waiting at the dance studio, or waiting for the children’s drama classes to end, or waiting in line anywhere.

Don’t be fooled by its small size, this magazine is chock full, 62 pages’ worth of information, advice, and encouragement on marriage, mothering, homemaking, homeschooling, cooking, and more:)

The theme of the Spring issue is “Time Flies” (isn’t that the truth?!).  There are three parts into which the articles in the magazine are divided:

Godly Women – I loved reading the regular column “Picket Fence Ponderings”, where Amy O’Quinn discusses how to stop wasting time: stop worrying (remember God is in control!), prioritize and be careful you’re not spending all your time with amusements (like your blog for instance), let go of your anger, and stop living a life of regret!  We only have 86,400 seconds per day – “don’t let time fly by while you’re wasting time!”

house Pictures, Images and PhotosGodly Homemakers – I love the regular column, “Yippee, It’s Free!”  This issue there are great sites for kids as well as terrific time management sites for mothers shared.  And if you don’t already have a homemade pizza night at your house, you’ll love the article “Joy! in the Kitchen”.

Godly Mothers – One article that particularly resonated with me was “Today”, written by Robin McKay.  In it she talks about how easy it is to “get wrapped up in lists, piles, books, lessons, chores, and thoughts.”  Are we guilty of not “capturing the daily delight” and instead busy with the “have-to-get-dones”?  I know this happens to me!  Our children grow so fast, we have to remember to cherish our time in the now with them and “record them on our heart”, before they’ve gone!

Eternal Encouragement Magazine is just $25.97 US for a Canadian (+ $8 shipping), U.S. or International Subscription OR get an electronic subscription for $14.97 US.

So order your magazine and then sit back and curl up with your very own copy 🙂

And, just in case you missed it, you can get a FREE e-book, Organizing Happiness (a $9.97 US value) simply by signing up for the free Encouraging Moments e-newsletter – just go to the www.Eternal to subscribe.

True Treasures: 10 Years of Teach Magazine! – Review

Here it is…my first review for The Gabby Moms! I received True Treasures: 10 Years of TEACH Magazine for honest review from TEACH Magazine as a part of The Gabby Moms blogging program 🙂

As soon as I received this beautiful, 103-page treasury, I curled right up and started to read through all the fantastic articles, hand-picked from 10 years of TEACH Magazine.  What a wonderful time of year to receive this – wintertime, a time to curl up and read by the fire, a time when we as homeschoolers, homemakers, and moms could use some inspiration and encouragement for our journey!  I tucked this in my bag and hungrily read it in the dentist’s office, at the dance studio, and waiting for the children’s drama classes to end.  With 71 articles from 30 different authors, there is something for everyone tucked in this treasury.  Keep pen & paper or your iPod handy to take notes – this treasury is FULL of things you’ll want to do, try, and remember!

Jewels That Make the Heart Sparkle

One article that sparkles under this heading is Slow and Steady, by Lorrie Flem.  I love how she says, “We are actually doing the most important work in the world.”  It’s true, and it sure makes me feel good!

Marriages Made of Solid Gold

I love Cindy Rushton’s two-part article, Godly Helpmeet.  She reminds us that our husbands need three things: our prayer, encouragement, and support.

Parenting Pearls: Practical and Priceless

Another American Tall Tale, by Lorrie Flem, challenges the misconception that all teenagers are surly.  She makes the comparison that the Biblical description of a fool is, sadly, what we expect of our modern teenagers!

Homemaking That Dazzles Like Diamonds

In the article Getting It All Done, Marilyn Boyer shares are sorts of fantastic, practical organizational ideas; this was one of those articles I needed to take notes on.  Mary Felker, author of the article Principled Housekeeping, also shares some great inspiration and encouragement for keeping the house clean, along with some practical tips.

Homeschooling Nuggets of Wisdom

One article starts out in a very funny manner: The Homeschool Supermom, by Cory Lisk.  It starts with perfectly laid homeschool plans for the beginning of the school year which completely deteriorate within a few days, sound familiar? LOL.  Another article I enjoyed, This Too Shall Pass, by Amy O’Quinn, is about enjoying the seasons of our lives.  This really resonated with me, as I am always reminding myself that I need to enjoy this period of my life and my children’s lives as it will pass more quickly than I think!

Godly Living That Glitters

One of my favourite articles is: 12 Things I Would Not Change by Nancy Nolan, looking back on her life.  I particulary love that she “would not care about the dust bunnies or dirty dishes as much.” Another favourite is, He Who Angers You Controls You by Lorrie Flem, on the topic of patience and anger, and how impatience is really a gentle form of anger.  Food for thought.

These are just a few of the wonderful treasures that I found.  To view some excerpts from True Treasures for yourself, click HERE.  This treasury will have a special place on my bedstand, because I know I will be reaching for it often, especially when I need a little pick-me-up as a homeschooler, a mom, a parent, or a wife 🙂

Good News!  You, my readers, will receive $4 off of the regular $19.97 US cost of True Treasures until May 31, 2011 (only one per customer and per order) with this code: GabbyMom.  Shipping to Canada is only $8.00 US.
