Write a Novel This Month! For ALL Ages

write a novel

Write a Novel This Month! For ALL Ages

It’s November 1st already! Where did the year go? The good news is, with November comes National Novel Writing Month – it’s NaNoWriMo time again! My husband and my daughter (13 years old now) will each be working on a novel this month. Me, I’m a nonfiction writer, so I’ll be continuing to work on a series of books about Geek Schooling.

What is NaNoWriMo?

In case you’ve never heard of it, National Novel Writing Month happens every year in November. The challenge is to write a novel this month – yes an entire novel in only 30 days. Start November 1st and finish by midnight on November 30th. Adults must write a full 50,000 words, but the Young Writers Program allows writers who are 17 years old and younger to set reasonable, yet challenging, word-count goals.

People of all ages are participating in NanoWriMo all around the world! The best part is, everyone wins. Meet your word count and get a certificate of participation at the end of the 30 days.

If your child is 13 or older, they can opt to sign up on the main site at www.nanowrimo.org. Just remember that they will have to meet the goal of 50,000 words since the adult site doesn’t allow you to set your own word-count goal.

You and your child can have fun and encourage each other by writing a novel alongside each other all month long. There are many free tools available on the sites to help you write your novel, that homeschoolers will especially enjoy. If your child is under 13, send them to the How NaNoWriMo Works for Young Writers page! If you are an educator, visit the How NaNoWriMo Works for Educators page. Happy writing everyone!

Who will write a novel this month and take the NaNoWriMo challenge in your family? Please let me know in the comments below!

Love, Luck &
Laughter,

Kimberly

I Hope You Dance!

I Hope You Dance!

I have dance on my mind since my daughter participated in the final dance competition of the season this past weekend. In fact, I got in the act as well and competed in a big studio number on stage with my daughter. Here we are backstage at the competition:

When did you last dance with your children? Whether you are a trained dancer or can only step side-to-side to the music, you can dance in your homeschool day. There are many amazing benefits to dance! It’s also an easy “physical education” activity you can do inside the home, especially on rainy or snowy days.

Here are some ideas for having fun with dance in your homeschool:

  • Pop some orchestral music on and hand your children each a scarf to move with to the music. You can throw the scarf, sway with the scarf, make circles with the scarf, or anything the music moves you to do. The William Tell Overture finale is excellent for this, as is Holst’s The Planets, or even your favourite movie soundtrack.
  • How did people dance from the historical period you’re studying? If you’re studying the 17th or 18th century, try a Minuet. If you’re studying Modern times, have some fun with the twist, the polka, or the bunny hop!

  • Put on some music from your youth and show your children how you used to tear up the dance floor in “your day”.
  • If you enjoy having fun with different styles of dance, pick up or rent a Zumba DVD and give it a try. Zumba is dance as a form of exercise, and incorporates many different styles.
  • Do you have a Wii? Enjoy “Just Dance” or the Wii Fit. Parents can dance too, it’s a hoot and it’s great exercise! (We like to pull Just Dance out for birthday parties and often the parents will dance in the background to some of their favourites while the children play).
  • If worship dance is more your style, put on some worship music and dance unto the Lord.
  • Do you or your children want to explore a particular style of dance?

    • Check out this series of how-to videos for jazz
    • Whatever the style of dance you’re interested in, there are likely videos and books available at the library or YouTube videos online.
    • Of course, nothing can compare to lessons at a terrific, local dance studio, whether it’s for your children, yourself, or both. Enjoy classes at the studio then have fun practising daily as part of your homeschool day!

“I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean.
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens.
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance…
I hope you dance,
I hope you dance.”
~ from “I Hope You Dance” – song by Lee Ann Womack

Screen-Free Week May 2-8, 2016

We love technology in our home! We are all gamers and enjoy the convenience of all our screens and devices. But we also enjoy a good power outage now and then.

The power goes out a little too often around here sometimes. When my kids were younger, as soon as the power went out they would burst into a flurry of activity. They eagerly gathered candles, started the fire in the woodstove, and gathered water from the pool (if it wasn’t frozen) so we could flush our toilets. A power failure can still be a fun time now that my kids are 12 and 17 – every one enjoys reading, playing boardgames together, and keeping the fire going if it’s cold outside.

Screen-Free Week May 2-8, 2016

You can experience the fun without the inconvenience of a power outage. Screen-Free Week has been celebrated every year since 1995. Join in this year and get your child to turn off the TV, video games, computers, cell phones, and devices to celebrate the magic of being unplugged!

Children today often spend too much time glued to screens and this can lead to health and behaviour problems. Just think of how little your kids are playing outside compared to when you were a kid! So encourage your child to get some outside time, read, explore, and play this week! You may want to print off a certificate of achievement for them at the end of the week. And consider taking some screen-free time yourself as a parent.

Enjoy some of these Screen-Free Week ActivitiesDownload the official Organizer’s Kit. Check out this Screen-Free Week infographic for more information and ideas and go to Screen-Free Week on Facebook this week for more inspiration and ongoing support.

What is your favourite screen-free activity in your home or homeschool? Please let me know in the comments below to give other parents ideas!
