2 Things to Do for Yourself on Mother’s Day

As a mother, especially as a homeschooling mother, it can be easy to get frustrated, discouraged, and downright grumpy. With your kids stuck to you most every moment of the day and the homeschool year still dragging on, it can be hard to keep perspective on it all. Why did you decide to be a SAHM or a WAHM? Why on earth did you start homeschooling anyway?

things to do for yourself on mother's day

2 Things to Do for Yourself on Mother’s Day

There are two things I try to do for myself every year and they both involve reading, something I find very difficult to ferret out time to do these days (as a homeschooling WAHM)! Mother’s Day is the perfect time to treat yourself! You can even sit back in a bubble bath and read (my personal favourite) or tell your family you’re going to the local coffee shop for an hour. So, what should you read to get some perspective and stay refreshed?

1) Read a book about parenting. We’re all parents first, regardless of how or where are children are learning. It can be easy to feel like nobody else is going through the same challenges with their kids. Reading a parenting book can remind you that we ALL go through those challenges! And even more important, you’re not a bad parent because your children aren’t perfect Stepford children! Mine sure aren’t. To my horror, one of them even turned into a fairly typical teenager, ack!

Reading a parenting book also reminds me of all those little skills or tricks I have learned in the past and have someone forgotten to use. This includes, listening to my kids and getting their eye contact and/or putting a hand on their shoulder before requesting something of them. It’s easy to be so focused on what needs to be done that we forget about connecting! This year, I’m already reading great parenting books from the parenting section of the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle.

Because I’ve been more of a grumpy mom than a great one recently, I’m starting with From Grumpy to Great.

2) Read a book about homeschooling. Even if you’ve been homeschooling for ten years like me, reading a book about homeschooling can not only refresh you, but give you new ideas. Most of the time I like to read a book I’ve never read before, but sometimes I will pick up old favourites like The Well-Trained Mind and read over their personal stories to give me a boost.

This year, I’m starting with Homeschooling Day by Day.

What books will you make a point of reading this year? What things to do for yourself on Mother’s Day would you recommend? Please let me know in the comments below!

Happy homeschooling and parenting!

Cooking Real Food in the Homeschool

While sometimes we don’t exactly put the “home” in our homeschool with all the activities we’re involved in and all the travelling back and forth to the city, like many homeschoolers, we eat most of our meals at home. I don’t know about you, but I get bored easily. My husband likes to tease me about the fact that I don’t like to have the same meal twice in a row.

It can be difficult to find “real food” recipes sometimes. I find so often when I’m doing a search for recipes that I find mostly recipes with pre-packaged ingredients or mixes as main ingredients! So what do you do when you get bored of the same old recipes? I’m excited to be able to reach for my iPad and check out all the ebooks from the Real Food Recipes section of the The Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle!

***This bundle is no longer available. Stay tuned for more great resources and bundles!***

Check out all the great ebooks:

  • 42 Simple & Healthy Dinners by Brandy Ferguson, Emma Swanston, and Stacy Karen @ 42 Days to Fit ($4.99)

Self-Esteem: Harmful or Helpful?

self-esteem

Self-esteem: Harmful or Helpful?

Every time I turn around, I hear a discussion on children and self-esteem, and I groan. What good has all this focus on instilling self-esteem done for our children and our society?  Do we have better kids or more well-adjusted adults now?  I think not. There are many programs inside schools and even outside schools which stress self-esteem, and some parents and homeschoolers are obsessed with instilling self-esteem in their children.  There are free self-esteem worksheets and lesson plans available online. So what’s wrong with focusing on self-esteem?

When did this obsession begin?

Our North American obsession with self-esteem began as early as the 60s, but didn’t come into wide use in schools until the 80s. I experienced the results of this obsession first-hand. At the end of my Grade 8 year, a teacher sat me down to tell me that I had earned too many top marks and they were not going to give me all the trophies I had earned – they were going to give them out to other students to “share the wealth”.  I was so upset. Up until that point, my grades were so very important to me, and they suddenly became less so.  I also respected that teacher a little less.  It reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons in which Principal Skinner says “I don’t have any opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything.”

self-esteem

Should we have a different focus?

Many children seem to be adopting a “me-first”, self-important, self-absorbed, entitlement attitude. They are given constant praise and anything they do is “ok” so as not to “hurt their self-esteem”. Studies on self-esteem have shown that it is a myth; it’s not the answer. Instead, I believe we need to focus on self-respect and self-discipline when parenting and homeschooling our children.

Why do we say we hold someone in esteem or respect them? Because they’re someone we look up to, due to their actions or the work they’ve done. Children can have self-respect based on something tangible, such as through hard work and achievements. When we allow our children to make choices and goals and follow-through to actually accomplish things, they will have achieved self-respect and experienced self-discipline. Even simple things such as chores can go a long way to help children feel self-respect. I believe my children are empowered by the fact that they are able to cook, clean, and care for the household, pets – run the household – even though they are only 10 and 15.

self-esteem

If you’re a Christian, you may also find that faith in God gives kids self-respect. It’s easy to respect yourself when you know that God made you who you are and loves you so much that He can count the hairs on your head, and knew you even before you were born.

What do you think? Are you raising your kids with self-esteem and a constant stream of praise or are you teaching them to have self-respect through their actions and achievements? Let me know in the comments below!

Screen-Free Week May 5-11, 2014

screen-free week

We love technology in our home, but we also enjoy a good power outage now and then. It’s still exciting for my daughter, although my teenage son is less enthused than he was when he was younger. As soon as the power goes out, both children burst into a flurry of activity. There are candles to gather, the fire to be started in the woodstove (if it’s cold outside), and water to be gathered from the pool (if it’s not frozen) so we can flush our toilets. Everyone enjoys reading and boardgames. It’s a fun time!

Screen Free Week 2014

You can experience the fun without the inconvenience of a power outage. Once again this year, the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is hosting Screen-Free Week! It’s not too late to join in and have your child turn off the TV, video games, computers, cell phones, etc. and celebrate the magic of being unplugged!

Children today are often spending way too much time glued to screens and this can lead to health problems, behaviour problems, and more. So encourage your child to get some outside time, read, explore, and play this week!

Enjoy some of these ideas in The Family Guide to a Great Screen-Free Week! And consider having a day or two unplugged as a parent. You can use this great image on your social media accounts to let others know what you’re up to.

Screen-free week
