ARTS & CULTURE

Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design Creativity and Craft Camps
July 6-10: Ages 7-9
July 13-17: Ages 10-12
July 20-24: Ages 13-15
Half Days: $70, Full Days: $120

CBU Music Camp
The Gaelic College in connection with CBU, launches a brand new, traditional music day camp experience designed for teens and adults!
August 24-28th; Fee: $300 (tuition cost only – meals not included)
Participants choose from a variety of options at a variety of levels, from beginner to advanced, including fiddle, piping, step dance, guitar, and Gaelic language and song. Following classes each day, an 80 minute interactive Career Workshop will be open to students (as well as the general public for a fee). These workshops will be facilitated by featured community members who work music-related careers and will allow attendees to gain a deeper understanding of career options available to them in the field. The week wraps up with a ceilidh social.

Class Acts Drama School Summer Day Camps 2014
Registration: Saturday, June 20, 9am – 3pm
Southend Community Centre (28 Hillview St, Sydney) upstairs in the drama room. Each camp runs 9am-3pm. Cost: $130 (family discount available)

July 6th – 10th, Drama Skills for Life
Public speaking, audition skills, focus, self-confidence, social empathy, self-acceptance, creative problem solving
ages 11-14
Instructor: Brian Gallivan
July 13th – 17th, Adventures in Drama
A week of make-believe activities, drama games, and theatre crafts that will introduce acting to new students as well as develop the skills of returning students. A small production will be performed for friends and family at the end of the week.

July 27th – 31st, Improv
For students old and new to work on the all-important theatre skill of improvisation through games, activities, and an end-of-week showcase.

Fortress of Louisbourg
The Fortress holds three camp-style programs for youth every summer. Must be a member – family membership is only $15 and you can buy a membership and register for programs online.
Children’s Program for ages 5-12. 5 days. Approx. $75
Dress up in 18th century clothing, eat period snacks, play period games, and more.
Youth Apprenticeship for ages 13-16. 5 days. Approx. $75
Must have completed one year in the Children’s Program. Dress in 18th century clothing and learn baking, soldiering, blacksmithing, gardening, cooking, lace making, fishing, music, craft making, or helping to supervise child animators (choose two).
Youth Fife and Drum Program for ages 12-16 with some experience playing the drum, fife, or flute. Audition required.

Savoy “Got Glee?” Summer Musical Theatre Program
10 day camp, $350, 9am-3pm
July 6-17th, for ages 10-15
Directed by Gayle Lahey & Todd Marsh. Exposes students to modern music, movement, acting, and film! Students will also be rehearsing and preparing for a live musical theatre performance which will take place on the main stage of the Savoy Theatre!

Studio Villa Nova Art and Animation Camp
Dominion
Art and Animation camps are taught by two CBVRSB Art teachers Sandy and Joey MacNeil.

Investigate your Surroundings
5 days – July 27rd-31st, from 9am to 3pm
Cost: $150 a variety of art supplies provided and a healthy snack (5 and up all ability levels welcome)
Make art outdoors and explore the relationship between artistic expression and the natural world. Campers will learn to use a variety of materials and explore art forms, including painting, drawing and sculpture.
Fun Ways to Make Art
5 days – Aug 10-14 from 9am to 3pm
Cost: $150 a variety of art supplies provided and a healthy snack (5 and up all ability levels welcome)
Learn an assortment of fun and creative ways to express your ideas. Take your images further with advanced techniques such as printmaking, mixed media, photo transfer and collage techniques.
Animation Camp
3 days – Aug. 19-21 from 9am to 3pm
Cost: $150 Age 10 plus and all ability levels welcome – All art supplies and technical equipment provided and a healthy snack
Structured classes give students hands on experience with a variety of animation styles including, hand-drawn animation, cut-out animation, claymation, stop-motion, and green screen effects.

Bold Filly Horse Empowered Confidence Camp for Girls
Cabresto Ridge Equestrian Centre in Coxheath
3-day programs running weekly during the months of July and August, 9am-3pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
This is a non-riding program. All activities with horses are done from the ground.
Cost: $300. A $100 deposit is required with registration, with balance being paid on the first day of arrival.

Highland Village Programs
Wednesdays: Laithean Sona/Happy Days Chidren’s Living History Program
Take part in this special living-history program for children and get a sense of what life was like for Gaels in those days past. The program features special hands-on activities including chores, crafts, games, language, and song. Costumes are provided. For ages 8-12 only. 10 am to 4 pm. $30 per child. Prepaid reservations required. No refunds or discounts. 13% HST included.
Thursdays – Na Deugairean/ The Teenagers Living History Program for Youth
Partake in this special living-history program for teens and get a sense of the responsibilities and the lifestyles of young Gaels in days past. The program features special hands-on activities including chores, crafts, language and song. Costumes are provided. For ages 13-17. 10 am to 4 pm. $30 per child. Prepaid reservations required. No refunds or discounts. 13% HST included.
Fridays – Spors/Fun Gaelic Games for Kids
Join us for a morning of interactive games that focus on language, song, dance and other aspects of Scottish heritage. Gaelic games such as Tunnag Tunnag Geadh, Duck Duck Goose, center on basic Gaelic vocabulary and phrases which are incorporated into fun and engaging games for children. Spors is for children aged 5-10. 10 am to 12 pm. Free admission.

Super Summer Day Camp
New Dawn C.S.I. (former Holy Angels)
July 2nd to August 28th, Monday to Friday 8am to 5:30 pm.
$125 per week, $25 per day

    A fun idea for summer creativity can be found at Studio Villa Nova Art and Animation Camps in Dominion. We offer unique outdoor art experiences. Art and Animation camps are taught by two CBVRSB Art teachers Sandy and Joey MacNeil.

    The [email protected] Society of Cape Breton County offers technology camps for children ages 8 to 13. Our camps are designed to engage your child’s problem – solving and critical thinking skills while having fun!

    Your child will get to work with some cutting-edge technology education toys and learn many fundamental concepts related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).

    Camps are designed to run the full week, but you can also register for specific days if you choose. All camps run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, but we do have some flexibility to accommodate early drop-offs and late pick-ups. Camps are $30 per day or $120 for the week. We have some scholarships available for families in need, so if tuition is a problem please contact c[email protected]cap.ca.
